Sometimes we can stigmatise abortion unintentionally, by repeating harmful rhetoric, using inflammatory language, or just avoiding the word ‘abortion’ altogether.
The stigma that surrounds abortion feeds harmful myths and misconceptions which when internalised can negatively impact abortion laws, public health education, and women’s abortion experiences. Ultimately, it makes it harder to access safe abortion care and can even put those seeking abortions and abortion providers at risk of prosecution.
But abortion is not shameful. Nearly one in three pregnancies end in abortion worldwide. It is a safe, common, and much-needed healthcare service that allows individuals to take control of their bodies and futures.
Help us to end abortion stigma. A shift in language and culture can help end unsafe abortion, save lives, and help communities become more informed, autonomous, and empowered.
When considering abortion services in Australia, understanding the financial impact is crucial. Abortion costs vary depending on whether you have access to Medicare and/or Private Health. Or recent blog explores how both Medicare and private health insurance affect abortion costs, providing a clear understanding of the financial aspects involved in accessing abortion services.

We recently welcomed our global CEO, Simon Cooke, to Australia.
During his visit, he visited our clinics across the country and met with staff.
He also briefed members of the Australian Parliamentary Group on Population and Development (APGPD) at Parliament House. Joined by @msi_asiapacific`s Executive Officer, Merewyn Foran, and MSI Canberra`s Nurse Unit Manager, Kathleen Pritchard, the discussion focused on the challenges and progress made in protecting reproductive choice and rights in Australia and globally.

Knowledge is power when it comes to protecting reproductive choice.
Today`s entry is Unsafe Abortion: What it means, the impact it has on the lives of millions of people around the world and why we must fight to protect choice everywhere.
Evidence shows that restrictive laws and limited access do not reduce the number of abortions, they only make them less safe - and it’s the poorest and most marginalised communities that face the brunt.
Without access to safe care, 35 million people resort to unsafe abortion methods every year, globally. Our teams around the world witness and deal with the terrible consequences of unsafe abortion every day.
At MSI Australia, we believe that the right to make our own choices about our bodies and futures must be protected and when it comes to abortion rights, the only way is forwards 💪
We unapologetically stand for choice every day to make this vision a reality and we stand in solidarity with our pro-choice advocates and partners around the world, fighting to protect choice 💙
📢 You can`t have gender equality without access to abortion and contraception.
When we all have the right to make choices about our own bodies, we can pave the way to a more gender-equal world.
We’ll keep defending women’s access to healthcare, and advocating for the right to choose, no matter what. And we know many of you will be right there with us.
A recent study highlights severe barriers to abortion access for women in rural New South Wales, where a lack of local services and restrictive healthcare policies force many into informal, underground networks for care.
MSI Australia’s Managing Director, Greg Johnson, noted that while Noonan’s study was small and focused on one region, “the experiences ring true with all of the things that we hear at MSI Australia across rural and regional care”.
“Fundamentally, abortion is still at the periphery of an unaccommodating health system,” he said.
“Abortion care should be truly seen as an equal and accepted part of healthcare. Until we get there, we’ll continue to have the problems that we currently have, particularly in rural and regional Australia.”
When our clients share their abortion journeys, we hear how much courage and resilience it takes to make the best choice for themselves. This story from an MSI Australia client reflects the challenges of accessing abortion care as a temporary visa holder facing financial distress, and the power of receiving compassionate support along the way.
In this journey, she talks through her experience—from grappling with the decision of whether to return home to the relief of finding financial support and compassionate care. Swipe to see how MSI Australia’s case management team made a difference at every step.
